The Change Project offers a service to women and men who have experienced domestic abuse and whose (ex)partner has been referred to the perpetrator programme. This service is free and is available regardless whether your (ex) partner completes the course.
Our associated Partner Support service is aimed at increasing victim's safety. By enabling victims to explore and make sense of their experience of domestic abuse, we can help to increase their control over their own lives by:
We make proactive contact with every current or ex partner of the client attending the perpetrator programme. This is done through sending an information pack and through making every effort to make contact by telephone.
Follow up and priority contact
We always try to stay in touch with (ex)partners by calling them at regular intervals. When we have specific concerns for the safety of a victim or his/her children we immediately prioritise that call and do everything in our power to minimise the risk.
I’m not sure I want to get involved?
You do not have to. The partner’s safety officer services are voluntary and whether you accept the service or not does not affect your partner or ex-partner’s suitability assessment outcome. However the partner's service is highly recommended.
How an abuser can discover your internet activities:
If an abuser has access to your email account, they may be able to read your incoming and outgoing mail. If you believe your account is secure, make sure you choose a password that an abuser will not be able to guess.
If an abuser sends you threatening or harassing e-mail messages, they may be printed and saved as evidence of this abuse. The messages may constitute an offence.
History / cache file:
If an abuser knows how to read your computer's history or cache file (automatically saved web pages and graphics), they may be able to see information you have viewed recently on the internet.
You can clear your history or empty your cache file in your browser's settings.
PC web browsers, including Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox & Google Chrome
- On your keyboard, hold down 'Ctrl' and 'Shift', then press 'Delete'.
- If available, select a time period to clear.
- Choose which items to clear; typically 'History', 'Cache/Temporary Internet Files' and 'Cookies'.
- Click the 'Delete'/'Clear' button.
Safari on a Mac
- Select 'Safari' from the menu bar.
- Select 'Reset Safari'.
- Choose 'Clear History' and 'Remove all website data'.
- Click the 'Reset' button.
Internet App on Android Phones
- From within the Internet App, tap the Menu button.
- Tap Settings, then 'Privacy and security'.
- Tap 'Clear cache', 'Clear history', and 'Clear all cookie data'.
Safari on an iPhone
- Open the 'Settings' App.
- Tap 'Safari', then 'Advanced'.
- Tap 'Website Data'.
- Tap 'Remove All Website Data'.
To avoid leaving any cached/temporary files, cookies or history while browsing the web, your browser should offer a special browsing mode:
Select 'New incognito window' in the menu.
Select 'InPrivate Browsing' in the 'Safety' menu.
Select 'New Private Window' in the menu.
Select 'New Private Window' in the 'File' menu.
Internet App on an Android Phone
- From within the Internet App, tap the 'tab' icon at the top of the screen.
- Tap the 'spy' icon to enter 'Private Browsing' mode.
Safari on an iPhone
- From within Safari, tap the 'tabs' icon at the bottom right of the screen.
- Tap 'Private' to enter 'Private Browsing' mode.
